3d Molecular Designs Dna Replication Activity Guide

Flow of Genetic Information Kit©

Don't be surprised if one of your students blurts "Now I get it!" while using our Flow of Genetic Information Kit©. Manipulating the kit's color-coded foam nucleotides and placemats, students:

  • Model replication of the leading and lagging strands of DNA.
  • Model transcription as they copy one strand of DNA into mRNA using an RNA polymerase.
  • Model translation/protein synthesis as they decode the mRNA into protein on the ribosome placemat.

Your students can then explore the folding of the protein into its final 3D shape using the popular Amino Acid Starter Kit©.

Teacher Tips

Please allot approximately 45 minutes to assemble the first kit and 30 minutes for each additional kit (if you have more than one). Colors may fade. Consider storing foam kits in a dark location such as a closet, cabinet or drawer.

If you wish to use the replication, transcription and translation placements simultaneously in your classroom, you will need to purchase a Replacement DNA & RNA Nucleotide Set to ensure that you have enough pieces.

If you have the Amino Acid Starter Kit © , the appropriate side chains from that kit can be inserted into the 10 white amino acids included with the Flow of Genetic Information Kit © . You can also purchase the Side Chain Expansion Pack described above.

You may wish to use the gray nucleotides to make the new "daughter" strands in the replication activity, in order to call student attention to the newly-synthesized DNA. You can also use them to model the different patterns that emerge in the Meselson and Stahl experiment that determined how the process of DNA replication occurs.
